Why Encapsulate?

true knot in placenta

Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing the mother's placenta after the birth of her baby by dehydrating, powdering and placing it into capsules for the mother to ingest.

Placenta encapsulation is nature's way of helping mamas heal and restore energy after birth. The placenta produces all of the hormones during pregnancy; once it's delivered, you have a sudden and drastic drop in hormones. This can lead to decreased milk supply, sadness or "baby blues," fatigue, low iron, among other things. Placenta capsules can help to balance out your hormones and moderate your mood, energy, and physical healing, leading to a happier and more energetic postpartum period.

Some benefits of placenta encapsulation are:

  • Enhanced bonding experience with baby
  • Increased milk supply
  • Increased energy
  • Helps to prevent postpartum depression and baby blues
  • Increased iron stores
  • Faster healing
  • Decreased postpartum bleeding

Hormones, nutrients and minerals found in the placenta:

  • Oxytocin

FAQ

wHAT are your qualifications for placenta encapsulation?

I have been a Certified Placenta Encapsulation Specialist through Brilliant Birth Academy since 2024. In that time I have processed over 50 placentas. I also hold a Food Handlers Certificate and OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Certificate ensuring that every placenta is prepared following strict sanitation and safety protocols. My goal is to provide families with the highest level of care, safety and professionalism throughout the encapsulation process.

What method is used to process my placenta?

I use the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) method for placenta encapsulation. This process involves steaming the placenta at 220 degrees for about 20 minutes to eliminate any potential bacteria or viruses. Following this, the placenta is dehydrated at 145 degrees for 18 hours, ground into a fine powder, and encapsulated for consumption.

HOW MANY capsules WILL MY PLACENTA MAKE?

How many capsules you receive will vary greatly and will be based on the size of your placenta. On average you can expect 80-180 capsules.

I HEARD THE PLACENTA IS A FILTER ORGAN; is this true?

No.

While often referred to as the “filter organ,” a more apt title for the placenta would be the “facilitator organ.” Acting as a facilitator, the placenta ensures that essential nutrients reach the baby while toxins and waste are redirected into the mother’s bloodstream for disposal. It’s important to note that toxins and waste do not linger in the placenta but are efficiently managed by this remarkable organ.

IS IT SAFE TO TAKE WITH OTHER MEDICATIONS?

Absolutely! Because your placenta is entirely natural, it poses no risk of interaction with any other medications you may be taking. If you have an concerns, you should always consult your provider.

WHAT IF I TEST POSITIVE FOR GBS OR MY BABY PASSES MECONIUM DURING BIRTH?

You can still safely consume your placenta with GBS+ status or if your baby passes meconium. Because I utilize the Traditional Chinese Medicine method, which involves steaming the placenta at 220 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes, followed by dehydration. This meticulous process effectively eliminates any potential bacteria, including GBS, as bacteria and viruses cannot survive at temperatures exceeding 131 degrees Fahrenheit. As an extra measure of safety, I also soak your placenta in vinegar prior to steaming.

CAN I STILL ENCAPSULATE MY PLACENTA IF I HAVE A CAESAREAN (C-SECTION)?

Yes, in fact this is another reason you SHOULD encapsulate your placenta. You will heal so much faster!

How do I get my placenta to you after I give birth?

Let me know as soon as you deliver; better yet, let me know when you're in labor! After birth we will set up a time for pick up.

If delivering in a hospital: Upon admission, inform your nurse of your intention to keep your placenta. You will need to sign a release form, after which the hospital will store your placenta in a provided container for collection. I always suggest taking your own cooler, just in case.

For Birth Center and home births: store placenta in refrigerator or on ice within 4 hours of delivery.

Note: Communicating with your OBGYN or care provider about your desire to keep your placenta can facilitate the process, as they can authorize its release.

WHEN WILL I GET MY PLACENTA CAPSULES?

After receiving your placenta, you can expect to receive your placenta capsules within 72 hours.

WHEN IS IT NOT SAFE TO ENCAPSULATE MY PLACENTA?

Safety is our top priority. With that being said, there may be times it isn't safe to consume your placenta.

  • Tobacco, drug or alcohol use in pregnancy
  • Placenta sent to pathology
  • Maternal temp was 100.4 or higher at time of delivery
  • Placenta came into contact with high amounts of maternal fecal matter
  • Cancer of the placenta diagnosis
  • Active STD or STI outbreaks
  • Diagnosed with bacterial infection at any stage of pregnancy
  • HIV, HEP A, HEP B, HEP C or any other bloodborne illness
What ingredients are used in encapsulating my placenta?

I only use fresh ingredients. This includes:

  • Lemon
  • Turmeric
  • Cayenne
  • Ginger Root
  • Frankincense
  • Myrrh
